We are passionate about cultivating individuals, guiding them towards becoming accomplished entrepreneurs. Our goal is to cultivate skilled innovators committed to driving the success of small businesses in the South African diamond industry

About Us

About Us

On the 16th April 2015, the Kimberley Diamond
and Jewellery Incubator (KDJI) was founded by
the Northern Cape Provincial Government (NCPG)
and the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA)

The objective of the establishment is to actively seek solutions to the multiple challenges facing South Africa’s diamond jewellery manufacturing industry including the empowerment of historically disadvantaged groups, poverty alleviation, community improvement and human capital development. The purpose of KDJI’s establishment is to develop diamond cutters, polishers and jewellery manufacturers into better business people through appropriate business development interventions. These interventions are focused on addressing the high failure rate of existing small entrepreneurs in the mineral beneficiation and jewellery manufacturing sectors due to a lack of entrepreneurial skills. KDJI works with viable small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the mineral beneficiation and jewellery manufacturing sectors.

These are entrepreneurs at different stages of the growth cycle – from business idea/concept design stage to early-stage start-ups as well as established entrepreneurs. Since its formation, KDJI has grown to become to become the only incubator with capacity to provide knowledge exchange, shared infrastructure and technology support to entrepreneurs in the precious minerals and jewellery manufacturing sector. KDJI has assisted over 70 small business enterprise in the diamond and jewellery industry since 2015.

Our incubation program is meticulously designed to guide businesses through the challenging and delicate early stages of development, aiding them in not only surviving but thriving.

At KDJI, we cultivate a nurturing, educational, and encouraging atmosphere tailored to entrepreneurs navigating the pivotal phases of launching a new venture.

Our Business Incubation Programme

KDJI’s runs a three-year incubation programme. The programmed aims to create targeted interventions at each stage of the small business life cycle and combine this with each phase of the incubation programme. KDJI’s programme includes the following incubation phases list.

Pre-Incubation Period: 3-6 Months

Pre-incubation is vital stage of the incubation model as it is the foundation of the three year programme. This stage efficiently and effectively shapes companies for investment and growth. This involves, business planning, prototype development, harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit and effective mentoring and coaching.

Launch Phase Period: 6 Months

The launch phase works in line with pre-incubation, one the company is able to successfully complete pre-incubation. The incubator aids the SMME in launching the product which includes generating a market interest from both the consumer, potential partners and funders.

Growth Phase Period: 1 Year

In the growth phase the SMME has now demonstrated that it has a workable business. The SMME has customers or a market. The incubator will intensify support at this stage to ensure that the company capitalises on the market interest.

Graduation Phase Period: 1 Year

At this stage the incubator may simulate a ‘real world’ environment and increase the costs for the SMME to be in the programme e.g. market related rent/ internet. The incubator will aid the SMME in finalising a few business issues and plan for expansion in this phase. The SMME is ideally supposed to grow beyond the incubation programme and self-sustain without the incubator’s assistance.
